Retired Citizens Advisory Council changes meeting time
First board meeting since June; events planned; dance attendance improves
The Arkansas City Retired Citizens Advisory Council met Nov. 14 for the first time since June and decided to change its future meeting times to 1 p.m.
The schedule change, requested by council member Gary Humiston, will make it easier for some members to attend immediately following lunch at the Ark City Senior Citizens Center, 320 South A St.
The change was approved 4-0. Kristin Sparks, director of senior services, said the time change wouldn’t be problem unless there is a big attendance for lunch, but the meetings can start without her.
The council also discussed several upcoming big events at the senior center, including a Thanksgiving luncheon at noon Nov. 17.
Donnie Huffman will provide entertainment starting at 11 a.m.
A similar dinner is planned for the week before Christmas, with entertainment to be provided by the Twilighters and the Music Club chorus, and there will be a special New Year’s Eve dance on Dec. 31.
Huffman also will play music at the New Year’s dance, which will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission with be $8 per person, rather than the usual $6. This change also was approved by council members.
Sparks said the center will be closed Nov. 24-25 for the Thanksgiving holiday. It reopens Nov. 28.
Council members present Nov. 14 were Jerri Achenbach, Larry Gilmore, chair Carol Goldwater, Humiston, Glen Morrison and Sparks, serving as advisor. Chris Dancy and Jack Givens were absent.
Goldwater reported that attendance at the center’s bimonthly dances remains strong, with 39 people attending the last dance, a recent high. She said there is a need for additional volunteer help, although Sharon Campbell has assisted lately.
The next dance will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 18. Doors open at 6 p.m.
The Retired Citizens Advisory Council, which meets on the second Monday of every month, governs the operations of the Senior Citizens Center. Five of its seven members must be at least 62 years old.
The advisory council’s next meeting will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Senior Citizens Center.
