Ark City police arrest barricaded suspect after 8-hour standoff

Sotelo arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, criminal gun possession

Arkansas City Police Department logoThe Arkansas City Police Department arrested a barricaded suspect after an eight-hour standoff late Dec. 19 into early Dec. 20.

Adrian Sotelo, 29, of Arkansas City, was arrested on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminal possession of a firearm.

He was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield in lieu of $45,000 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City.

Sotelo remained in custody at the time of this release.

Officers were dispatched at 11:30 p.m. Dec. 19 to 1311 South B St. for a report of a suspect who pulled a gun on two people and threatened to shoot them. One victim was male and the other female.

The suspect then went to his home at 626 South C St. and barricaded himself inside with his mother. South Central Kansas SWAT was called to the scene and negotiations began with the suspect.

A command post was set up at the intersection of B Street and Madison Avenue. Negotiations continued from about 1 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. Dec. 20, when the suspect finally surrendered to police at the scene.

The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the standoff. No one was injured during the incident and the standoff was resolved peacefully.

A defendant’s guilt or innocence is to be determined by a court of law.
