Police investigate 78-year-old pedestrian’s death in car accident

Alcohol, drugs not thought to have played role in fatality collision at 4th, Maple

Arkansas City Police Department badgeThe Arkansas City Police Department is investigating a motor vehicle accident that resulted in one fatality late Aug. 4 in northwest Arkansas City.

The deceased is Sandra Woodworth, 78, of Arkansas City.

Her name was withheld briefly this weekend, pending notification of family.

Police and the Arkansas City Fire-EMS Department were dispatched at 5:08 p.m. Aug. 4 to the intersection of Fourth Street and Maple Avenue for a report of a traffic accident involving a pedestrian.

An investigation determined that Woodworth apparently was walking in the roadway prior to being struck by a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old Arkansas City female.

Both Woodworth and the vehicle were eastbound on Maple Avenue from Fourth Street.

Woodworth was transported by ambulance to South Central Kansas Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Neither alcohol nor drugs are thought to have played a role in the accident.

The 21-year-old driver did not sustain injuries in the accident and declined treatment at the scene.
